Sarah Palin

DOTK of the Year 2008

On December 4th, 2006 Sarah Palin made history when she took office as only the eleventh governor of Alaska and the very first woman to hold the office.  This year, Sarah Palin became the first Republican candidate for Vice President of the United States.

Sarah Palin is not one to leave her Christian faith at home in the closet when she goes about the business of governing Alaska. She walks the walk and that speaks volumes.  In 2006, Gov. Palin declared October 21-27th to be Christian Heritage Week in Alaska.

Sarah Palin’s mother made sure that her children were active in local Bible churches and now Gov. Palin refers to herself as a Bible-believing Christian.  (Every DOTK knows that those words are like waving a red cape in front of the media bull pen!)  Sarah earned the nickname of Barracuda on the high school basketball court.  Off the court, she led the local Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Sarah Palin and husband, Todd have five children, the oldest of which serves his country in the US Military. During Sarah’s fifth pregnancy, she learned that she was carrying a Down Syndrome child.  Unlike 97% of mothers presented with that discovery, ending her unborn son’s life was simply never an option for Sarah Palin.

On April, 18, 2008 Sarah Palin gave birth to son Trig and issued this public statement:  "Trig is beautiful and already adored by us. We knew through early testing he would face special challenges, and we feel privileged that God would entrust us with this gift and allow us unspeakable joy as he entered our lives. We have faith that every baby is created for good purpose and has potential to make this world a better place. We are truly blessed."

Sarah Heath Palin has been “an Alaskan” since 1964 when her parents relocated to teach school in Skagway. Sarah earned a bachelor of science degree in communications-journalism from the University of Idaho in 1987.  From hockey mom, to PTA mother, to city councilwoman, Sarah Palin went on to be Mayor of Wasilla, Alaska all because she saw a problematic situation and she wanted to help make it better.  With little or no financial backing, whenever she ran for office, everyday Alaskans embraced her although the established politicians in the state vowed to shut her down.

With the domestic help of and unconditional support from Alaska’s First Dude, Governor Palin has worked tirelessly to bring Alaska out of a mire of corruption that had a strangle hold on the prosperity of the state and its people.

Serving in government is an important calling and those that God calls, He equips for the job. The female gender is not a disqualification for public office.  Women who stand up and take the first punches like Sarah Palin, do it for all of us who subsequently hear that call from God.  For Christians who look to the Bible for guidance, Galations Chapter 3, verses 27 & 28 tell us:  “For as many of you as were baptized into Christ . . .  there can be neither Jew  nor Greek, there can be neither bond nor free, there can be no male nor female; for ye all are one man in Christ Jesus.”
